Planning and the Will of God | Bob Wriedt | James 4:13-17

"So, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

This is one of the most common questions adults like to ask kids in our culture. And I get why - it can be fun to hear their answers. It gives us a glimpse about what they care about and how they see the world.

But we all take kids' answers with a grain of salt. We know that their desires will change, opportunities won't develop the way they hope, and the marketplace doesn't have the space for another Batman.

Life doesn't go according to our plans, at all age. How many times have you said to yourself: "I never thought I'd be in this situation."

When life doesn't work out the way you thought - what do you do with that disappointment?

There are very few of us who are living out the profession we thought we would at 8 years old, not to mention other significant aspects of our life - geography, family status, physical well-being, etc

This week at Grace we are in James 4:13-17. James warns his readers of the danger of thinking that we can know and plan our future, as if we are God himself. I'm eager to get into this passage with you as we consider how to live out of a trust in the will of God together. See you Sunday!

In Christ, Pastor Bob

James 4:13-17

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
